Hey everyone!
Welcome back to the Monster Menagerie, our weekly showcase where we introduce a powerful Dungeons & Dragons monster that are ready for adoption from the Menagerie, so Dungeon Masters can bring unforgettable encounters to their tabletop RPG campaigns.
This week’s Monster of the Menagerie is something truly unsettling…
"The Devouring Eye – Aberration of the Endless Hunger" - File and stat sheet by DM Stash - Print and paint by Useful 3D Prints.
The Devouring Eye
We once again reached out to Phil, our trusted Monster Menagerie handler, to help us understand this floating horror.
JC from Useful 3D Prints: “Phil, I’ve heard unsettling whispers about this one. What exactly is the Devouring Eye?”
Menagerie Handler – Phil: “This one gives even me the chills. The Devouring Eye is a Large Aberration but does take up 3x3 on a grid map, classified as Challenge Rating 10, making it an extremely dangerous boss encounter for mid- to high-level adventurers. It floats silently through the air, watching, waiting… judging.”
JC: “Floating creatures always make parties nervous. What makes this one particularly dangerous?”
Phil: “Its central eye projects a powerful antimagic cone, which can completely shut down spellcasters. Wizards, Sorcerers, Clerics—they suddenly find themselves relying on steel instead of spells. That alone can completely change the flow of a battle.”
JC: “That sounds devastating for magical parties.”
Phil: “It gets worse. The Devouring Eye fires magical eye rays that can paralyze, frighten, charm, disintegrate, or even tear the life force directly out of a creature. Its disintegration ray can reduce victims to ash instantly.”
JC: “So positioning and planning are critical.”
Phil: “Exactly. And if it senses weakness, it can use its Devour Mind ability to instantly kill vulnerable creatures and restore its own vitality. It feeds on fear, paralysis, and hesitation.”
JC: “That must make it incredibly difficult to finish off.”
Phil: “It also has Legendary Resistance, meaning it can shrug off effects that would normally disable other creatures. And thanks to its Legendary Actions, it can reposition itself or strike between turns, constantly keeping pressure on the party.”
JC: “Where might adventurers encounter something like this?”
Phil: “The Devouring Eye is perfect as a dungeon boss, ancient guardian, or lurking aberration beneath cities, catacombs, or forgotten vaults. It works especially well as a creature protecting forbidden treasures or secrets.”
JC: “And Dungeon Masters can adopt it now?”
Phil: “Yes. When adopted, Dungeon Masters receive the full character sheet and a detailed 3D printed miniature, and the full stat sheet, including all stats, abilities, eye rays, and legendary actions needed to run this terrifying encounter.”
