Monster Menagerie Interview

The handlers have returned with another field report…

JC: “Phil, what have you brought us this time?”

Menagerie Handler – Phil: “This one’s nasty. The Ashqarid is what happens when the desert decides it’s had enough of travellers. It’s a massive burrowing predator that strikes from beneath the sand.”

JC: “So we’re dealing with an ambush monster?”

MH – Phil: “Exactly. The Ashqarid excels at hit-and-run tactics. It burrows beneath the battlefield and erupts from the ground with devastating force, knocking enemies prone and scattering formations.”

JC: “That already sounds dangerous… what makes it deadly?”

MH – Phil: “Its control. The Ashqarid uses its pincers to grapple targets, locking them down while it lines up its next move. And if that wasn’t bad enough, its stinger can paralyse creatures, leaving them completely vulnerable.”

JC: “So once someone gets caught… it’s game over?”

MH – Phil: “Pretty close. It can drag creatures underground using its Buried Alive ability, dealing damage over time while the rest of the party scrambles to react. It forces players to make quick decisions or lose a party member.”

JC: “What about survivability?”

MH – Phil: "It’s got Legendary Resistances and strong mobility. Plus, while burrowed, it creates difficult terrain above it — meaning the battlefield itself slows the party down while the Ashqarid moves freely.”

JC: “So this is more than just a monster… it’s an encounter.”

MH – Phil: “Exactly. This is the kind of fight your players will remember — the ground shifting beneath them, allies being dragged under, and nowhere feeling safe.”
