Let's get into our interview with Phil!
The handlers have once again secured an interview. Let’s see what we can learn about this creature…
JC: “Phil, good to see you again. What is this monster?!”
Menagerie Handler – Phil: “It's not something you want to meet in the woods, that’s for sure. The Thornmother is a Huge Plant creature, a corrupted sentinel of the forest. What was once a guardian has become something… far more dangerous.”
JC: “Dangerous how?”
MH – Phil: “The Thornmother doesn’t just fight — it controls the battlefield. Vines lash out from incredible range, dragging creatures in and locking them down. Once you're caught… you're not going anywhere.”
JC: “So this is more than just a damage dealer?”
MH – Phil: “Exactly. This is a battlefield control monster. It restrains enemies, pulls them closer, and punishes anyone who tries to fight from a distance.”
JC: “What happens when adventurers get too close?”
MH – Phil: “That’s when it gets ugly. The Thornmother uses its Chomping Maw to devour restrained targets, healing itself in the process. It turns your party’s positioning mistakes into its own survival.”
JC: “Sounds like positioning is everything in this fight?”
MH – Phil: “Absolutely. On top of that, it can unleash Bloom of Vines, erupting the ground around it and restraining multiple targets at once. If your party gets grouped up… they’re in serious trouble.”
JC: “And I assume it’s not easy to take down?”
MH – Phil: “Not at all. With Legendary Resistances, reactive attacks through Thrashing Roots, and additional Legendary Actions, the Thornmother keeps constant pressure on the party.”
JC: “Any advice for Dungeon Masters running this creature?”
MH – Phil: “Use terrain. Forests, ruins, overgrown battlefields — anywhere the Thornmother can blend in and control space. This isn’t just a fight… it’s an encounter.”
